INTERSPORT PILZ was founded more than 55 years ago in Gleisdorf by the Styrian sports retail pioneer Wolfgang Pilz and, as a specialist sports retailer and top partner of the INTERSPORT premium sports retail group, operates 14 locations in Styria, Burgenland, Carinthia and East Tyrol, as well as 13 INTERSPORT stores in Hungary.

The company's focus is on offering a wide range of customers in the region a top selection of high-quality, sought-after and innovative sports brands for the most important sports from biking to outdoor activities, with the best individual advice and top service.

1964 Sport Pilz Ges.m.b.H. was founded in 1964 by Wolfgang Pilz in Gleisdorf, Styria. With just one employee and 50 square meters of space, the foundation was laid for what is now the INTERSPORT PILZ sports experience world.

1970 The year 1979 is marked on the one hand by the early accession to the INTERSPORT Austria cooperative, an association of innovative sports retailers that still exists today, and on the other hand by the opening of the 2nd branch in Weiz.

1990 At this time, Sport Pilz Ges.m.b.H. already has 5 branches with the opening of additional stores in Fürstenfeld, Feldbach and Hartberg and, as a regional family business, is constantly expanding its network in south-eastern Styria through annual relocations and expansions.

1994 Bernhard Pilz and Leo Schieder joined the management in 1994. With the goal of being the leading regional sports retailer "Best-In-Town".

2002 Karin Pilz is appointed as the third managing director. Founder Wolfgang Pilz hands over management of the company to Bernhard Pilz (purchasing and marketing), Karin Pilz (finance and accounting), and Leo Schieder (controlling and facilities). This lays the foundation for further development. A phase of standardized space expansion follows as part of the INTERSPORT XL franchise partner concept. Pilz's own purchasing team is established.

2005 - SPORT PILZ Company crosses state borders for the first time and opens its first branch in Carinthia with INTERSPORT XL in Wolfsberg.

2006 - In 2006, national borders were crossed and the very first INTERSPORT location in Hungary was opened in Nagykanizsa. To date, four more locations have followed in Hungary under the leadership of Managing Director Peter Csillery, who, after training at INTERSPORT Pilz, took over the management of the SPORT PILZ Group (SPG) Hungary in 2010.

2013 The second state border in Sport Pilz's history is crossed and a branch in Oberwart, Burgenland (formerly Sport & Golf Wiesberger) is taken over. Through the acquisition of locations and the establishment of branches in Deutschlandsberg and Leibnitz, the family business already has 11 branches at this point. In Western Hungary, there are now 4 branches.

2017 With INTERSPORT in Lienz, East Tyrol, the state border to Tyrol is crossed. The branch further increases the overall company's outdoor expertise, as the "outdoor experience" with special product ranges is a top priority in Lienz.

2019 The takeover of the INTERSPORT Villach location follows in order to further expand the concentrated regional INTERSPORT expertise in Carinthia. In addition, the 5th branch in Hungary was opened with Siofok.

2020 A major step in the history of the family business is taken in 2020. Following the branch in Klagenfurt North, which already opened in 2016, the large INTERSPORT flagship store in Klagenfurt East is opened - offering absolute sports expertise on over 3,000m².

And last but not least: Martin Tunst, who started with us as an apprentice and has gone through many positions up to shop and sales manager, has been appointed managing director for personnel and sales.

2021 Hungary: Pilz takes over the remaining INTERSPORT stores and from this point on has 13 stores in Hungary.

In March, we reopened what is for the time being the last, and thus 14th, INTERSPORT Pilz store in Spittal.

Unfortunately, we had to say goodbye to Wolfgang Pilz in 2021. (+ May 2021)

2022 Our only Burgenland store moves from Unterwart to Oberwart in the new part of the EO Center.

The Feldbach store is renovated and enlarged. From October 2022, we will be there for you in the new shop.

Feldbach, one of our oldest shops, has been completely redesigned and now shines in new splendor. Concentrated sports expertise with a wide range of services can be found on 2,500m2.

2023 Our store in the EKZ Weinland was expanded to 1800m2 of sales and service space and opened on March 16th. An extraordinary bike area and an information and relaxation zone make the visit something special.

2024 Our store in Klagenfurt North, which opened in 2016, is being renovated and transformed into a real eye-catcher. A special highlight is our expanded service area including a bike wash station!
